Hitcher, The
Dave Meyers makes his feature directorial debut on the new thriller, The Hitcher, an update of the 1986 film of the same name that originally starred Rutger Hauer. The screenplay for the updated version is credited to three writers -- Eric Red (who wrote the original), Jake Wade Wall, and Eric Bernt. Their story tracks the terrifying trajectory of Grace Andrews (Sophia Bush) and Jim Halsey (Zachary Knighton), a college couple who are tormented by the mysterious hitchhiker John Ryder (Sean Bean).
When Grace and Jim hit the road in their 1970 Oldsmobile 442 to meet up with friends for spring break, their pleasure trip soon turns into a waking nightmare as they rocket down a dark, rainy New Mexico highway and run head on into The Hitcher in black trench coat standing stranded in the middle of the road in a blinding storm. Frightened, they lose control of their car, then regain control, consider their options, and abandon him by the side of the road. When The Hitcher catches up with them later at a roadside convenience store, Jim feels guilty for treating the guy so badly and stupidly offers him a ride despite Grace’s misgivings. After some banal chit chat, Ryder predictably pulls a knife on them and the fun begins. Luckily they manage to dispense with Ryder, but only temporarily. When Ryder implicates them in a horrific slaying and continues to shadow them, the open road turns into a tense and suspenseful, action-packed battleground of blood and metal. Grace and Jim attempt to elude not only Ryder but also New Mexico State Police Lieutenant Esteridge’s (Neal McDonough) officers who are in hot pursuit.
Meyers, a director of music videos and commercials, delivers a chase thriller that is faster paced than the original and filled with scares, thrills, cars, blood, vistas, and a love story. Sure, it’s a remake of an original that was slammed by critics and arguably should have never been remade, but Meyers offers a fresh take on the original and gives audiences a thriller with action rather than straight-ahead horror. From the opening, the film never lets up and there are some fun scare-you-out-of-your-seat shocks that Meyers surprises us with including the initial encounter with The Hitcher, a pick-up truck diving off a cliff, and a terrifying early morning wake-up call at the local motel. While the script would benefit from better character development, Meyers does avoid the standard horror cliché of one dimensional kids that get systematically killed off. He replaces the Jim Halsey character from the original Hitcher with a couple, setting the stage for a strange relationship to develop between the three characters - a sort of perverse love triangle with Grace as the girl caught in the middle between the two guys rather that the homoerotic elements that characterized the Halsey-Hitcher relationship in the original.
Sophia Bush and Zachary Knighton project a convincing if somewhat bland on-screen chemistry that makes their characters believable as a young couple in love who stumble into a horrible experience and become fugitives from justice. The more desperately they try to make the right decisions, the worse things get, until they turn criminal midpoint in the film and face their fears head-on in order to survive. Bush’s fun-loving tomboy-daredevil with her skimpy wardrobe of low cut blouses and tight little mini-skirts will have no problem keeping the guys’ attention riveted to the screen and it’s fun watching how easily and effortlessly she upgrades to bigger and better firepower. Sean Bean, who reprises the Rutger Hauer role and makes it his own, is an intelligent actor who frankly deserves better material to showcase his considerable talent. As with every project Bean’s involved in, he brings an aura of believability and complexity to the role of John Ryder despite the limitations placed on his character by a so so script. His Ryder is intelligent, shrewd, disturbing, scary, and intense. While the supporting characters are mostly by the numbers, Neal McDonough also delivers a convincing performance.
Meyers attempts to address some of the logic flaws that plagued the original Hitcher, such as what motivates Ryder to do what he does. In Meyer’s version, Ryder is no longer a random guy chasing people and appearing suddenly out of nowhere. He begins the film as a mysterious kind of phantom without his own back story, but as the film unfolds we slowly come to realize that Ryder is looking to end it all for himself -- and he’s looking for the right person to help him. When he encounters Grace and Jim, he finally finds a worthy opponent in Grace and becomes obsessed with corrupting her and making her serve his purpose. You’ll love the sadomachistic undercurrents in their relationship.
Meyers attempts to reinvigorate the characters and their story by doing some completely new things such as putting a love story at the center of the film with two leads that an audience can connect with emotionally, then building the action and suspense around them to create depth and add dimension to the story. There’s also more conversation in the remake as the couple play off of each other while dealing with the Hitcher’s attacks and the cops pursuit which in turn allows Ryder to come into sharper focus. While Meyers takes his inspiration from the original Hitcher, he re-blocks elements of it and redoes key scenes. In an era when people no longer pick up hitchhikers, he finds a credible way to get Ryder in the car with the couple. Up to a point, the remake also plays more believably and intelligently in terms of what characters would really do if they found themselves facing this kind of nightmare.
The Hitcher’s technical elements are solid. The film’s exteriors and big action scenes were shot in New Mexico taking advantage of the wide vistas and beautiful landscapes. The night time and interior scenes were shot in Austin, Texas known for it top notch crews that ensured more production value ended up on the screen. Director of photography James Hawkinson uses lighting and composition effectively to reflect the turbulent emotional landscape of the characters. When Grace and Jim begin their trip, they’re driving through beautiful, brightly lit landscapes, but as their encounter with The Hitcher draws near, things turn darker and grittier. The action-packed mayhem, cleverly staged by stunt coordinator Kurt Bryant, includes a car chase at 100 MPH, a stunt man jumping off a 30-foot embankment, and guys getting thrown out of cars. And there’s even some CGI. You’ll laugh at the road kill featured in the film’s opening shot. The highlight of the film’s soundtrack is Trent Reznor’s nihilistic Nine Inch Nails “Closer.”
Meyers attempts to elevate a well done B movie to an A-level character thriller that is firmly rooted in psychological fear, suspense and tension. However, the film’s logic and believability still leave a lot to be desired, the suspense is sometimes too predictable, and there’s little emotional payoff at the end. That said, what some may argue is another unnecessary remake becomes a nevertheless entertaining film due in large part to a strong performance by accomplished actor Sean Bean. In fact, he’s one of the best things in it. This remake may not offer a lot that’s new and original, but it did make me scream, jump out of my seat, and never want to pick up a stranger – unless of course it’s Sean Bean.
