I got the chance to meet Peter Jackson about 4 years ago, where he was giving a talk about the first Lord of the Rings movie. (Fellowship had just come out). It was interesting, especially to see who was there because they were Rings fans or who was there because they were a Jackson fan. I was a Jackson fan, he signed my copy of the Frighteners as well as a concrete garden gnome, which was a motif in his films for awhile. Particularly the breaking of them. I shook Peter Jackson's hand, and then I asked him "So is Universal going to finally let you do King Kong now?" knowing that he had tried to previously get the film made. He just smiled and said something along the lines of "One film at a time."Well now the wait is over. The Rings have concluded, and it's time for Peter Jackson's King Kong. And it's a damn fine piece of filmmaking. Jackson has surpassed Spielberg in the sheer entertainment and love of filmmaking department. As you sit and watch the film, you realize that Jackson loves everything he's doing, and couldn't be happier paying homage to a classic film while answering the need of modern film audiences, all without losing focus or, most importantly, heart. The story is simple enough, if you don't already know it. Carl Denham (Jack Black) needs to make his movie. The studio has denied him the funding and his leading lady has bailed. So Denham does what any filmmaker in that situation would do: He steals his footage back, along with the camera, and boards a boat to Skull Island, where the film will take place. He also finds down on her luck Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts) and convinces her to come along and be his new starlet. Along for the ride is Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody) the writer who is duped into coming along. After a VERY long boat ride, the ship finds Skull Island. The natives are not too pleased with the new visitors, and after some confrontations, kidnap Ann and force her to become the sacrifice of Kong, the king of the jungle hidden behind a giant wall. Love blossoms between beauty and beast, while Jack and Carl and a host of others travel the island in search of Ann. (Or in Carl's case, in search of footage). Ok, there's the basic story line. What Merian C. Cooper managed to capture in 85 short minutes back in 1933, Jackson takes about 3 hours to accomplish. It's not like it feels long at all, far from it. It just feels sometimes that all this stuff is way too much. It's very exciting, and truly thrilling, especially a few long action sequences. But it feels like a little too much at times. Sensory overload. And that's after about 40 minutes getting to the island, where the movie seesaws a bit, while trying to regain it's sea legs. Once they get to the island, however, it's a different story altogether, and the movie takes off like a rocket. It's definitely Jackson's sandbox, and he has some of the greatest toys around. Kong himself is an impressive feat in technology. He looks fantastic and fresh, and more importantly, almost human. He has scars and imperfections from fighting the multiple beasts in the jungle (most of whom are dinosaurs, which provide more thrills than all three Jurassic Park films, and which look just as good). Kong is expressive, but is also a primate, don't forget. And he definitely is expressing this more for the first time on film. Kong ("played" by Andy Serkis in the same MoCap technology which brought Gollum to life) is seriously the best actor in the whole thing. Without him, the film would be another Godzilla circa 1998. Thankfully, this is far far away from that. Jackson captures the spirit and the feel of the original film while proudly showcasing it as his own. He doesn't lose focus of the fact that he loves the original so much and just wants to tell the story. Sure, he tells the story in fifteen shots when three will suffice, but you kind of forgive him that as you take in the film. It is captivating, there's no denying that. It's also one of the better adventure films I've seen in quite some time, if not the best. Jackson holds the reins with assurance, and delivers what he promises, even if it does get a little out of hand at times. (And for all you Jackson fans out there, pay close attention to a little Dead Alive aka Braindead shout out. You can't miss it if you know the film well enough, but it is in the background. I believe I was the only person laughing at it.)I mentioned how utterly great Kong is, acting wise. But the other actors are not too shabby either. Especially as the film progresses. Adrien Brody does well in the leading man role, but he's actually the supporting male role. He's the "other guy" in the relationship between Kong and Ann. He does well, and makes a likable lead, even if he has to do a lot of running most of the time. Naomi Watts does Ann Darrow well (even though Fay Wray will ALWAYS be Ann Darrow), and almost makes you believe what she sees in Kong. Her heartbreak is genuine, and she does the role well. Surprising most people will be Jack Black, toning his wild persona down and delivering a great portrayal of the filmmaker lost amongst his many lies, but who truly wants to make his movie. Like I said, they all do well, but Kong towers over them. Pun intended. It's a great looking, and great sounding flick. Very good use of both. I find the film works best in the quieter moments (the ice skating sequence could have gone either way, and will depending on the crowd you see it with). But there are some enthralling moments loud and soft, and they all add up in the end to an extremely satisfying filmgoing experience. And the music is pretty good as well, incorporating the original themes with new ones from James Newton Howard.Let's be honest, you already know if you're going to like this movie or not. Purists and people who deride big budget special FX extravaganzas will find the film too long and too much. But most other people will see this and have a thrilling time at the movies. As for me, of course I liked it. I had a wonderful time at the movies, even if I felt I could have spent a little less time there and still have enjoyed myself just as much. Hopefully Jackson will keep the traditions of Spielberg going with whatever he chooses to do next. At the very least, we can be grateful that when King Kong is brought back with all new technology, it doesn't lose the heart and soul that made the original so wonderful in the first place.
